Why HDPE pipes outperform steel pipes

Corrosion, service life, installation costs — comparing HDPE and steel pipes.

For decades steel pipes were the default choice for water and gas infrastructure. In recent years, however, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes have taken the lead worldwide. The reasons are simple.

Complete corrosion resistance

Steel pipes rust in soil and water and need cathodic protection and coatings. HDPE is chemically inert — it doesn't rust, rot or build up deposits on the inner wall.

50+ years of service life

Pipes made from PE100 resin are designed to withstand nominal pressure for at least 50 years at 20°C. In practice they last even longer.

Faster, cheaper installation

  • Light weight — less heavy machinery
  • Long coiled lengths — fewer joints
  • Butt fusion and electrofusion — joints as strong as the pipe itself
  • Trenchless methods (HDD, relining) are possible

Conclusion

Even where initial material prices are similar, the total cost of ownership of an HDPE system is far lower than steel. Our engineers are ready to help you choose the right pipe for your project.
